West Lafayette, Indiana – March 9, 2026 – In the fast-evolving world of nuclear energy, where precision and safety are paramount, Blue Wave AI Labs stands out as a pioneer in Nuclear-Grade AI™ technology. Our new flagship tool, CoreDesigner.ai, is transforming how engineers design and optimize reactor cores, making processes that once took hours or days achievable in seconds. But what’s it like to build such groundbreaking technology? We posed five thought-provoking questions to the developers at Blue Wave AI Labs to peel back the curtain on the AI that’s trusted inside American nuclear reactors.
What sparked the idea for CoreDesigner.ai, and how does it fit into Blue Wave AI Labs’ broader mission?
Having a background in nuclear engineering, I think we all shared a simple frustration with the core design process. It is an iterative, creative process, but the tools we had were slow, rigid and not very user-friendly. We wanted something that let engineers explore ideas, see impacts immediately, and stay in control of the physics. That vision fits directly into Blue Wave AI Labs’ mission: building Nuclear-Grade AI™ applications that engineers can actually trust and use in real reactor design work.
How does the AI in CoreDesigner.ai handle complex tasks like automated optimization, and what makes it “nuclear-grade”?
We use advanced machine learning models as surrogates for the rigorous physics calculations already trusted in core simulation practice, so there’s no “free lunch” in the physics. The speed-up comes from a very front-loaded training effort, using millions of high-fidelity simulation cases generated under realistic operating conditions. What makes it a nuclear-grade AI application is that both the data generation and the ML approach are tightly tailored to actual reactor operation. From the start, we also use many conservative assumptions and safety-critical parameters built directly into CoreDesigner.ai that puts it into a class of its own.
What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in developing real-time features like fuel bundle editing and visualization?
I’d say the biggest challenge was really understanding what engineers actually need in their day-to-day work. Fuel bundle design, in particular, is one of the most complex parts of core design, with a near infinite number of possible fuel composition combinations. Traditionally, every new design requires long, computationally intensive simulations that can take hours or even days for a single evaluation. With CoreDesigner.ai, we can do that in seconds. We’ve found an engineer’s exploratory process becomes much more interactive when they have access to real-time evaluations. As a result, it is far easier and faster for engineers to iterate and learn – not to mention a lot more fun.
What is your favorite feature in CoreDesigner.ai?
That’s a hard one, honestly, because we’ve enjoyed building every feature of CoreDesigner.ai. If I had to choose, I’d say the interactive mode is my favorite. When I was studying nuclear engineering, being “good” at core design meant getting comfortable with code and really complex input syntax to run core simulation. Now it can be as simple as drag, drop, and you’re done. I think that’s incredibly powerful, especially for younger engineers who grew up with intuitive, interactive tools in every other area of their life.
How does CoreDesigner.ai impact the licensed core design methodology?
It doesn’t. It is not meant as a replacement for any licensed core design process or prescribed simulation platform. It’s a tool for engineers that allows them to get to a strong design faster than ever before. Once you create a design in CoreDesigner.ai, you can export it and it runs through the same licensed track as any core that’s come before it. It integrates perfectly with existing workflows.
What’s next for CoreDesigner.ai, and how do you see AI shaping the future of nuclear energy?
Looking ahead, we’re really focused on making engineers’ jobs easier by expanding our automated design and optimization tools. The idea is that you can let the AI engine generate a set of strong core design options, then jump back into interactive mode to refine them. More broadly, we see AI becoming a powerful force in nuclear engineering. I can’t wait to help engineers explore this new frontier technology, while keeping them firmly in control of the final decisions.
